HP TouchSmart Tm2 Multi-Touch Tablet PC with Windows 7 – Australian Review

The HP TouchSmart Tm2 is a huge leap in performance, finish and quality for the long running TouchSmart multi-touch Tablet PC series. The TouchSmart Tm2 now boasts a sleek new design and features a Wacom Active Digitizer pen and Multi-Touch Screen, dedicated ATI graphics, Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 4 – 5 hour standard battery life. Tablet PCs like the Tm2 are much more than just consumption devices. The active digitizer pen allows you to enter data in your own handwriting at up to 40 wpm, take notes on digital paper and sketch and draw with pressure sensitivity. Coupled with Microsoft Office, you can draw on word documents, emails and powerpoint presentations. You can also read e-Books, web pages and pdf documents using the multi-touch functionality of Windows 7. As a Tablet PC the Tm2 functions extremely well and we recommend that it should be highly considered for students and home users. It can easily replace your current laptop or desktop.

  • I really needed the measurements. Thank you so much for telling me.

  • To decrease the glare and perhaps increase the feeling of writing on paper when in tablet mode, anti-glare screen protectors could do the trick. I haven’t used one though–I’m interested to see how it would play out on this model.

  • @oztabletpc As Tablet PCs are designed to be highly mobile, they tend to stick to the 12″ screen as a standard. If you need something bigger but you don’t need it to be mobile, you could look at a pen display like the Wacom Cintiq. It offers exactly the same functionality with a few extras too.

  • @shawntika The 12″ Widescreen (measured diagonally across) is around 10.5 x 6.5 inches. The resolution is really the key factor and it is 1280 x 800 on the Fujitsu T4310, T900 (13.3″) and HP Tm2. So essentially you will see the same number of pixels on the screen for all of them, they would just be slightly bigger on the T900 at 13.3″.

  • i looked at 13.3 too but the starting price of fujitsu is 1889 or above 1500 US dollars. it’s too costly for me. my budget is around 1000 US dollars.
If possible could you please tell me the height and width of the inside screen of touch smart tm2 and fujitsu T4310.

  • Thank you very much for the answer. There’s one thing that i really want to know. it’s about the screen size. the whole tablet is 12.1 but the screen on which we work. where the digitizer and the touch screen works. How many inches is that? 10 or 11 inches.
because right now iam using a 14.1 inch laptop and the size is perfect for me. iam kind of afraid that 12.1 will become too small for me.

  • @oztabletpc That said, the Tm2 is much better looking and feels more solid. Similar battery life and feels a bit thinner too.

  • @shawntika manu666tb is right, the nibs generally don’t wear out. I have used a Tablet PC for 8 years now and I have never had to replace the nib from wear.

The Tm2 screen is really shiny, but if you’re looking for a better pen feel, take a look at the Fujitsu T4310 or T730. Similar pricing, but has a matte screen finish. Better for outdoor viewing and has a softer feel. Both use the same Wacom Active Digitzer and Touch Tablet.

  • @shawntika The nib is softer than that of a Wacom tablet pen, because the screen is really shiny, so it would get scratched otherwise. I don’t think it gets flattened easily, otherwise it would have spare nibs. I tried it at a store and I’m getting it tonight. I’ll use it a lot, too, so in a week I’ll be able to tell you for sure. ;) )

  • how is the nib of the digitizer? is it made up of plastic or some solid material? if we frequently use the digitizer, the nibs will get flattened, right? in that case what should we do?

  • I have the older tablet tx2000 and its okay, but this one rocks! i’m getting the new version due out in June 2010. This waaaaay better than the iPad. Imagine how much lighter it will be with SSD instead of Hard Disk.

  • @Kingsta1234 I couldn’t really compare it at all to a macbook, how would you take notes on that? In answer to your other questions…

Is this? laptop capable in using Mic. Publisher, Onenote, etc sufficiently? Absolutely, no problems there at all for this one.

oh and does it still overheat? No, not at all. HP switched to the ULV Intel Core 2 Duo which is a standout performer and has no heat issues.

how long does the battery last? 5 – 6 hours from memory, check the specs…

  • what do you feel about this laptop over a Macbook(not pro)?

i am the technological director of my school’s newspaper, so i am in charge of designing the paper and putting articles into the design through microsoft publisher.

Is this laptop capable in using Mic. Publisher, Onenote, etc sufficiently?

oh and does it still overheat?

how long does the battery last?

  • Very helpful, thank you.

  • @jockiimusic Tm2 certainly looks better. The glossy screen is a big drawback for me though and it gives the screen a harder feel on then pen. Touch is also harder because of the glossy screen. Fujitsu T4310 or 4410 is a better pen and touch experience with faster processor. Now there is also the new T730 which will supersede the T4310 and includes an Intel i7 or i5 processor.

  • Hi i’m an Artist, and I work a lot in graphic design and tshirt design. I was wondering since you’ve had your hands on both the T4410 and the TM2 which one do you think is better for Art??? I was leaning towards the Fujitsu T4410, but I was wondering if you thought the TM2 was an overall better tablet pc.

  • @hazzibo Can do.

  • does this laptop come with microsoft word/powerpoing/excell already on it?

  • @uetzel Depends what you’re into… Certainly more functional.

  • more fun than a ipad? ….. properbly

  • @shaktiIIIgta yes, most definately. It is a laptop for all intents and purposes, and I think most laptops boot from USB these days.

  • does it boot from USB ?

  • those are the right words, TOUCH ONLY tablet ! alway wondered why theres still keyboard there !

    nice review

  • great review!

  • A good motorcycle logo that could make….. lol @ 2:10.
