RAPAPORT… What were the important marketing trends online for 2009? Metrics firm comScore released its annual findings on the ever-changing virtual world of branding and marketing online. While e-commerce sales fell slightly during the year, brands made great progress tapping into an evolving virtual landscape led by social media and videos. According to comScore, the year ahead will experience increased use of mobile technology, stronger use of the mega social media websites and watch for continued growth of online video channels especially given the rise of niche market players. During 2009, sales of jewelry and watches rose 4 percent, according to comScore. Other categories that experienced increases included books, software, sporting goods, video games and electronics. Facebook replaced Myspace as the “place to be” online, and Hulu is now capturing two hours of viewing time per month per viewer. Online users are spending more time watching videos and hanging-out on social media websites. Is your brand tapping into this emerging trend? Stay on top of creating content that adapts to mobile phone devices; create content and applications that serve both real-time and vertical specific results; and use cutting edge and very specific targeting techniques to place the brand in front of the online audience.
